Diabetes is virtually at epidemic levels in the United States as well as in many other nations ” especially those nations which adhere to the Western Lifestyle.

What this scourge does to the human body continues to be the subject of much discussion today. There is a constant rain of ideas in the popular press about what we can do about diabetes — and what we should do about this disease.

Dealing with diabetes is a huge business. The diagnosing, testing and supplying of various medicines has created an enormous industry.

Well, Banaba might be that “Natural” that could do something with diabetes. Banaba is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of diabetes in the Phillipines. Because Japan is nearby there has been some research done by Japanese science on Banaba leaves. This, because it appeared that Banaba leaves have the the ability to reduce blood sugar or having an “insulin-like” principle.

Banaba contains a natural plant insulin which may be taken orally, and according to Japanese research, Banaba has no side effects.

The Japanese have completed many studies on Banaba. Dried Banaba Leaf powder was mixed with chicken feed in one study. The yolk of the chicken egg was analyzed to discover any effect.

It was discovered that Banaba was present in the egg yolks. When the Banaba enriched egg yolk was fed to diabetic mice, their blood sugar level was normalized.

In one unusual study, a diabetic subject slept in a room where an alcohol extract of Banaba Leaf was sprayed into the air. The result was that while the subject slept a trace amount of corosolic acid was deposited in the lungs. Corosolic acid is believe to regulate blood sugar levels.

The leaf of the Banaba plant has been found to be high in corosolic acid. The night-time spraying reduced blood sugar levels to normal indicating that the corosolic acid had been absorbed by the subject of the test.

The Japanese studies isolated corosolic acid as the active component of the Banaba Leaf. To tests this, a 1999 Florida study was instituted which found that corosolic acid did lower blood sugar levels. And, in all patients treated. The higher the level of corosolic acid given, the lower patient blood sugar fell.

In addition, more recent studies have shown that the entire herb is said to be useful in lowering blood sugar, One study showed that the whole Banaba herb (leaves, roots, etc) had a glucose lowering effect and could be used to fight diabetes.

Banaba Leaf also had a beneficial effect in an entirely different area. It caused weight loss. This is believed to be true because of the way Banaba helps the body function.

A quotation from Supplementwatch is: “An interesting side-effect of tighter control of blood sugar and insulin levels is a significant tendency of Banaba to promote weight loss (an average of 2-4 lbs. per month) ” without significant dietary alterations. It is likely that modulation of glucose and insulin levels reduces total caloric intake somewhat and encourages moderate weight loss.”

As a result of many studies, many weight loss products now use Banaba as a safe and natural component which encourages weight loss.
